If this sounds like you, the Montgomery County Department of Parks, Northern Parks Division, is the place you want to be! We are currently seeking multi-faceted, highly motivated individuals to join us as a Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader – CDL at South Germantown Recreational Park.

The South Germantown Management Area is comprised of 4.5 parks and stream valley units to include South Germantown Recreational Park, three local parks, a portion of the Hoyles Mill Conservation Park, and a combination of 11 miles of natural and hard surface trails and 12 athletic fields. Under the supervision of a Park Manager, this role performs a wide variety of professional park operations. The selected candidate will be responsible for the supervision of a crew of six staff and the maintenance of given parks/park areas to ensure that areas are safe, clean, and provide passive and active recreation opportunities for patrons to enjoy.

Examples of Important Duties

 

  • Leads and directs a crew of career and seasonal park maintenance workers in all aspects of general park maintenance.
  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and monitors work while providing technical assistance to resolve problems.
  • Participates in employee evaluations and counseling.
  • Leads and directs crews in athletic field maintenance, minor construction projects, turf maintenance, and snow removal.
  • Inspects work sites and determines best solutions for general maintenance.
  • Performs general wildlife management under direction of Park Manager.
  • Leads crew in custodial tasks and trash/litter removal.
  • Leads and directs crews in playground repair and maintenance.
  • Mixes and sprays chemicals to treat plant and turf diseases or to eliminate pests and weeds.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of athletic field maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, parks and park/general maintenance operation, safety, turf maintenance, pesticides and their application, and basic auto and equipment maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with a Parks Department or other large and complex government organization preferred.
  • Advanced ArcGIS skills and proficient in MS Office, enterprise software and specialized software.
  • Knowledge of local, State and Federal laws and policies.
  • Maryland Pesticide Applicator’s certification is a plus.
  • Maryland Nutrient Management certification is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Incumbent primarily works outside with a combination of office work occasionally or as assigned.
  • Position requires a combination of field and office work. Work conditions may include exposure to various elements and adverse weather conditions.
  • Work requires constant bending, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects of up to 100 pounds.
  • An essential employee for on-call 24 hours for emergencies.
  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.  Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  5. Pass Commission medical examination.
  6. Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment;
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
    • National Playground Safety Institute certification.
