Irrigation Technician – Field Maintenance

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The University Athletic Association at the University of Florida is searching for an Irrigation Technician to maintain, repair, and optimize irrigation systems serving collegiate athletic fields and surrounding landscaped areas. This position plays a vital role in promoting healthy turf, safe playing conditions, and efficient water use year-round, particularly in Florida’s demanding climate. Responsibilities include: maintaining and repairing pumps, valves, sprinkler heads, rotors, drip systems, and mainline piping; programing, monitoring, and adjusting irrigation controllers based on weather conditions, field usage, and seasonal requirements; monitoring system performance to ensure proper coverage, efficiency, and water conservation; diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical hydraulic, and mechanical irrigation issues and responding promptly to emergency repairs; coordinating irrigation schedules with field maintenance and landscape teams; and maintaining accurate records of inspections, repairs, and system improvements.

This position requires the incumbent to diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical issues; adhere to safety standards, best management practices, and organizational policies related to athletic turf and landscape irrigation; be skilled, reliable, and detail-oriented; work independently and as part of a collaborative team; multitask effectively; engage effectively with others of diverse cultures or backgrounds; and work a non-standard work week which will/may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED*
  • One year of experience in irrigation maintenance and repair*
  • Experience with traditional and decoder-based wired irrigation systems
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Working knowledge of commercial irrigation systems and controllers
  • Knowledgeable of turfgrass and landscape irrigation requirements specific to Florida conditions

*An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted in lieu of listed requirement.
