Job Summary
The Golf Club of Georgia is a 36-hole privately owned, private club located in Alpharetta, Georgia. The facility consists of the Lakeside and Creekside golf courses, both ranked in the top-20 in Georgia. The practice facilities consist of a dual-ended Driving Range featuring the Cupp Academy which is home to a three-bay teaching center with putting, chipping, and bunker practice areas, along with a three green, 9-hole par 3 course. The Clubhouse is over 50,000 square feet with extensive landscaping and hardscapes. All Club facilities have been renovated in the past ten years including new bunkers, resurfaced Lakeside greens, complete renovation of the practice facilities, tree removals, various course improvements, and a complete Clubhouse renovation.
All greens are creeping bentgrass, Lakeside and the practice facility consist of 007 and Creekside is Penncross. All tees are Zeon or Zorro zoysia, along with the range fairway and target greens. Fairways and roughs are bermudagrass, with extensive fine and tall fescue deep rough plantings.
The Director of Agronomy is responsible for all facets of the golf course maintenance operation. The staff includes two Golf Course Superintendents, two Assistant Superintendents, an Equipment Manager and mechanic and a peak seasonal staff of 28 for the golf courses and grounds.
Job Tasks (including but not limited to)
- Writes recommendations for course construction or renovation projects to the Owner and General Manager. Supervises such projects, whether performed by GCOG staff or outside contractors.
- Formulates the annual operating and capital budget. Prepares all monthly budget variance reports and submits to the General Manager.
- Responsible for development and coordination of the maintenance staff.
- Defines golf course maintenance standards of operation and implements policies and procedures to meet them. Develops plans for all planting, fertilizing, and care of turf, plants, shrubs, and trees on the golf course and club grounds.
- Develops and maintains irrigation and drainage systems.
- Participates in all short- and long-range planning pertaining to the golf course and club grounds.
- Attends all Managers’ meetings and Owners’ meetings as required.
- Listens to and acts upon Owner’s concerns with regard to golf course and grounds and directs any concerns outside those areas to the appropriate manager.
- Recommends the purchase of equipment and supplies needed to maintain the golf courses and grounds to ownership. Oversees the purchase of approved equipment.
- Responsible for inventory control and approves all expenditures to ensure that all operating and capital costs are in line with approved budgets.
- Ensures accurate and complete record keeping of payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide and fertilizer applications, etc.
- Communicates regularly with other members of the management team to discuss activities, goals, and plans.
- Enforces safety program for employees.
- Ensures that chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance to local, state, and federal regulations.
- Attends conferences, equipment exhibits, workshops, seminars, and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf management innovations.
- Completes all other duties as assigned by management.
Education/Experience
- Prior bentgrass greens management experience in the Southeast/Transition Zone
- Experience at multi-course facilities is preferred
- Extensive project and renovation management experience is preferred
- 3-5 years prior head GCS/Director of Agronomy experience preferred
- Associates Degree required
- Min Experience of 5-7 years required
- Class A Preferred
- CGCS Preferred
