JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for daily oversight of golf course maintenance employees, ensuring crew assignments are completed. Schedule and supervise landscape maintenance and the use of and maintenance of equipment; planning, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditions, herbicides, and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic and manual controls. Work requires a considerable amount of independent judgment. Works directly with the Pro-Shop Supervisor to coordinate course play and tournaments to ensure the course is ready for such events. Reports directly to assigned supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION
- Supervises and manages golf course maintenance personnel.
- Plans, organizes, directs and participates in the repair, care and maintenance of the golf course and all properties within the physical boundaries of the course.
- Schedules, plans, and directs work of personnel utilized in the operation of the golf course.
- Determines whether the course is in playable condition after inclement weather and coordinates course closure or partial closure as appropriate with the Pro Shop Manager.
- Oversees the establishment and maintenance of a preventative maintenance program for all golf course equipment.
- Establishes, maintains and directs a program for mowing, watering, weeding, aerating, fertilizing, top dressing, over seeding, rolling of greens, tees, fairways and roughs.
- Supervises and participates in the propagation of grass and other plants and the control of fungus, weeds, rodents and insects through pesticides and other remedies.
- Prepares and recommends plans for the construction, modification and improvement of tees, greens, fairways, sand traps, etc.
- Oversees approved construction, modifications, and improvements of the golf course.
- Maintains, operates, and expands irrigation systems as needed for the proper irrigation of the course.
- Estimates and recommends the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment needed in the maintenance of the golf course and buildings.
- Assists in the preparation of the operating budget for course maintenance and oversees expenditures as approved.
- Makes personnel recommendations.
- Works to coordinate events with the Pro Shop Supervisor.
- Provides information and reports to direct supervisor as requested regarding the status of the course and its maintenance.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Experience in turf management or related field or trades.
Thorough knowledge of golf course operations and practices and the equipment and supplies necessary to effectively manage the same.
Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License; eligibility to be bonded; and eligible for possession of a pesticide applicators license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current Possession of a pesticide applicator’s license with 2 or more years’ experience in turf management. Educational background in turf management with a related degree.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A positive attitude and encouraging to others.
- Knowledge of the methods used in management of personnel, customer service, government operations, maintenance practices of facilities, and golf courses and equipment.
- Knowledge of the care and maintenance of grass, trees, and shrubs.
- Knowledge of computer operations for accurate record keeping and reporting.
- Knowledge of chemicals and fertilizers necessary in the maintenance of a golf course and /or knowledge of professional assistance in the area.
- Knowledge of EPA/EPD regulations.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems and their maintenance and operation.
- Ability to estimate materials, supplies and equipment needed.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in outdoor environments which include working in a variety of inclement weather conditions. Work involves extensive contact with other employees and the public, which includes handling public relations.
