The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation Southern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Sports Turf Maintenance Leader – CDL to perform skilled park maintenance work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as mowing, infield maintenance, field layout, field lining, and snow removal by working in a team environment and leading small groups of career and/or intermittent employees. The ideal candidate should possess leadership and supervisors skills with knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office for administrative tasks as well as skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, forklifts, and other such equipment.
This position will have a work schedule of Tuesday through Saturday from 6:00am – 2:45pm, however, based on work program needs, the work schedule may change to Monday through Friday or Sunday through Thursday.
Please note that the salary above represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for this position is $47,987 – $66,487. Salary is commensurate with experience. -
Examples of Important Duties

- Provide leadership and coordination of Athletic Field Program and development and communication work assignments
- Perform skilled maintenance of athletic fields to include soccer, football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, and cricket.
- Performs all golf course maintenance tasks at an expert level; includes, but not limited to, growing grass, irrigation, chemicals, diseases, athletic field specialized equipment and leadership of staff.
- Plans work and receive work orders, drawings, and plans. Estimates and orders supplies and materials needed for work and crew assignments, sets priorities for workers to complete assignments on-time and accurately and identifies and corrects problems as needed. Conducts inspection of park property for safety purposes. Leads and directs workers to accomplish established work programs and corrects problems. Oversees maintenance and renovation contractors and documents contract compliance.
- As directed by supervisor, maintains, prepares, and initiates records. Keeps inventory and supply records. Participates in investigations and writes reports of accidents, injuries and equipment damage. Submits routine and special reports connected with facilities and programs. Collect and enter data into the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system and enter work order completion forms.
- Leads workers on landscaping, trails maintenance and turf maintenance projects. May operate tractors, backhoes and other medium to heavy equipment to perform difficult projects. Mixes and sprays chemicals to treat plant and turf diseases or eliminate pests and weeds.
- Resolves customer complaints.
- Maintains athletic fields, according to established standards. Lays out field (for example, measures, plots and squares corners, plots yard lines, and marks lines).
- Participates in employee selections, performance evaluations and counseling and recommends disciplinary actions. Inspects worker quantity and quality of assigned tasks. Instructs safety training of equipment to workers.
- Utilize Commercial Driver’s License to perform park maintenance tasks.
- Ensure staff utilize proper safety equipment.
- Leads crew to cut grass with precision mowers. Performs maintenance and repairs of equipment.
- Inspect finished work assignments to ensure they are of high quality.
- Train reporting staff in the proper method and safety involving assigned tasks.
- Mixes and sprays chemicals to treat plant and turf diseases or eliminate pests.
- Operate various types of equipment, from handheld to light equipment.
- Ensure that all supplies, chemicals, and equipment are used and stored correctly.
- Maintain and ensure inventory is accurate to maintain equipment, parks, and facilities within our division.
- Provide input on reporting of assignments of staff to the direct supervisor.
- Obtain quotes, estimates, and properly order materials needed to complete tasks.
- Complete work orders and submit to Park Manager daily.
- Prepares and reports on-the-job injuries.
- Snow removal and other weather-related duties.
- Lead and monitor Park/General Maintenance Workers with day-to-day job duties, general park maintenance, program support, playgrounds, snow removal, athletic field and trails maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three years’ experience working in the Sports Turf Industry.
- Strong work ethic with the ability to independently lead a team.
- Class A CDL to transport crew members and/or equipment to successfully perform work program responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

- High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
- Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
- Pass Commission medical examination.
- Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:
- Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment;
- Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
- National Playground Safety Institute certification.

- Class/Specification: Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader – CDL
Primarily works outside. May work weekends, evenings, and holidays. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.) Ability to lift to 100 pounds is desirable.
May be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements is required within 12 months of employment.
