“Get involved”, is something you hear often when you are part of an organization or group. Giving back to your profession or organization really does help you to feel better about yourself, your career, and the people around you. If you are working for a company that has opportunities for community involvement or activities, these events decrease stress and help the company culture. Moreover, helping your career and overall reputation grow in it – and the community around you.
I was on the MAAGCS and VGCSA boards. Twice for the MAAGCS. (See pics and articles below) I really enjoyed all the involvement with these organizations as a Golf Course Superintendent, Manufacturers Representative, and VP of Genesis Turfgrass during my many years in this profession.
Many of you may remember when Steve Potter, Joe Herkalo, John Kotoski, others, and I started The Baltimore Greens Group. Many functions and get-togethers for that group! Oh, the memories!
Also think about who and what organizations to give back to, and how you can support them. Researchers, Salespeople, Manufacturers, Universities, and Distributors all give back in one way or another.
You may not be able to get too involved at this time or when you’ve tried before but at least try to attend a monthly meeting or get-together with your industry peers. Then remember to network and say hi to me when you see me.
