Merrrick Mondays: Man vs. Nature
Jan 12, 2026
I have worked with six different Golf Course Architects in my 52-year career and thousands of “Armchair Expert” architects. Have you? How did you do? If not, are you prepared? Most golf courses have been built with a vision and a purpose in mind. Could be from a golf architect, an owner of the land, a group of investors, a government agency, etc. So here is my answer to the first question: The golf course was sculpted by nature and man from a piece of land – created by God, and that sculpted wilderness is managed by man and mother nature. Make any sense?
Merrick Mondays: Me, Steve, and the Farm
Jan 5, 2026
I was eight years old; it was 1966 and I was standing in a pig pen on my neighbor’s farm holding a piglet’s legs, one under each arm wondering what was going on. My best friend Steve had just chased it, caught it, and helped me tuck one of its legs under each...
Merrick Mondays: The Winter Grind – (Literally)
Dec 29, 2025
For Golf Maintenance different climates have different winter offseason work, but I will answer from the Mid-Atlantic area perspective. Remember though, conditions still had to be great for golfers, particularly if there was no snow or was an unusually warm winter....
Merrick Mondays: Changing of the Guard – How New Generations of Turf Managers Change Holes on the Golf Course
Dec 22, 2025
Wow! Changing the holes every day just came to my mind with this prompt! There was never a class in school about changing the holes, you just learned it and did it somewhere during your career in golf management and no one liked doing it! Most people have no clue how...
Merrick Mondays: Generations, Personalities, and Being the Life of the Party
Dec 14, 2025
I have mentioned, “Fifty Years Old and Out” a couple of times in my blogs. This is something that many Golf Course Superintendents would say in the 1980’s and 1990’s about when it was time to get out of that role and do something else like sales. We Superintendents...
Merrick Mondays: Save Your Life, Through Moderation
Dec 8, 2025
Ok, let’s get to the heart attack story I mentioned a few weeks ago. I dropped from a massive heart attack in February when the course was closed due to some snow cover and wet conditions. It happened on the sixth fairway as my Assistant Superintendent Blaine and I...
Merrick Mondays: The Sandman and I
Dec 1, 2025
Todd Cowing has not technically been an employee of mine, but on paper, maybe one time. I am going to tell the story of Todd, my salesperson, colleague, and ultimately my good friend, and how he has drastically influenced my life since meeting him in 1987. He won’t...
Merrick Mondays: Hidden Gems are Worth the Hard Work
Nov 24, 2025
When I first became the Golf Course Superintendent at The Elkridge Club, there were many full and part time workers that had been there working for many years. Even my soon-to-be Assistant Superintendent was running the crew and he came from the Pro Shop thinking he...
Merrick Mondays: Times Change but the Work Doesn’t
Nov 17, 2025
Believe it or not, daily routines haven’t changed much since I started in this business in 1973. Equipment, communication, budgets, and expectations have been the game-changers. Interruptions come into play with those routines when there are weather extremes,...
Merrick Mondays: What I Want to Be When I Grow Up
Nov 10, 2025
I believe that my young grandkids think I am not a grandfather but just another kid. This is mostly because I act like a fun-loving kid around them and teach them all the finer things that a young child should know and do. I won’t mention the bodily noises,...
